Checking patent risks before project approval

At idea selection

Patent checks before further engineering work.

A consumer products R&D team evaluating technical concepts

Industry: Consumer products

Products: Novelty Search, FTO Search

The Challenge

The R&D team designs new products for a consumer products company, where engineers explore new structures, materials, and technologies across many product lines. Ideas were never in short supply, and new ones arrived faster than the organization could validate them. Some required substantial research but never became products. The hard part was deciding which concepts to continue, change, or stop before they took more engineering time.

Under the original process, engineers explored a concept first. The IP team became deeply involved only once the work received a formal project number. That could be months later, after initial design, technical research, and sometimes early experiments.

A patent issue discovered at that stage could mean rework, a change of direction, or a canceled project. Engineers also had no easy way to check patents earlier on their own. Claims are dense and written in legal language, so many early questions ended up with the IP team.

The later the finding, the more work it can undo

The Solution

The team began piloting a workflow in Patsnap Eureka that brought patent screening into concept development, before project approval. Engineers could start by setting out the technical goal, design constraints, and possible materials or structures, then use existing technical sources to explore and refine the concept.

With a proposed solution in view, Novelty Search helped identify closely related prior art and compare it with the concept's features. Overlap with an existing disclosure could prompt engineers to narrow the idea, change a feature, or revisit the technical approach while the design was still flexible.

FTO Search addressed a different question: which patents might affect making or selling the proposed product? It helped surface potentially relevant claims, features that might need a design-around, and components or target markets requiring closer investigation. The two searches gave engineers material to work with when deciding how to refine a concept and when to bring in IP specialists.

From concept to a sharper question for IP

General-purpose AI models can help engineers brainstorm and put ideas into words. Deciding whether a concept deserves more engineering work is a different task. It needs patent evidence that both engineers and IP specialists can trace and check.

WHAT EARLY PATENT SCREENING NEEDS

Grounded in patent data, built for review

  • Reliable patent data

    Broad coverage of patent records

  • Traceable evidence

    Findings link to specific patents

  • A patent-specific workflow

Search and analysis designed for novelty and FTO

  • Reviewable results

Engineers and IP specialists can check and record them

The Result

By bringing relevant patent evidence into idea selection, the team gave engineers a way to identify potential overlaps and adjust concepts while designs were still flexible. That made it easier to focus early R&D effort and bring IP specialists in for the questions that need legal judgment.
